Building Bridges in Family Philanthropy: CIPSI’s Singapore Visit

From 10th to 13th December, 2024, Li Foundation hosted a delegation from the China Institute for Philanthropy and Social Innovation (CIPSI) of Renmin University of China. Led by Mr. Zhang Jianming, Board Chairman of CIPSI, the delegation included esteemed academics and experts, marking a pivotal moment in advancing international collaboration in family philanthropy and social innovation.

During their visit, the CIPSI delegation engaged with prominent Singaporean institutions, including the Business Families Institute of Singapore Management University (SMU), Asia Philanthropy Circle (APC), Asia Community Foundation (ACF), National Council of Social Service (NCSS), and Li Foundation. Discussions focused on family philanthropy trends, governance models, legacy planning, and impact investment practices. These dialogues highlighted how philanthropy can strengthen family cohesion, promote social responsibility, and drive meaningful social change.

CIPSI’s contribution to philanthropy extends beyond academic engagement. This was exemplified through its role in the Chinese edition of A Philanthropist’s Guide to Giving: Asia-based Insights from Asia Philanthropy Circle《慈善家捐赠指南 — 亚洲慈善协会之亚洲视界》, launched in February 2024, at SMU. A collaborative effort between Li Foundation, APC, and CIPSI, the guide was enriched by Professor Kang’s expert research and translation, ensuring cultural resonance and strategic depth for Chinese-speaking philanthropists.

The visit also opened avenues for future collaborations, including joint research, academic exchanges, and talent development programs, laying the foundation for innovative solutions in family philanthropy.

CIPSI was established on 26th July 2016, with the generous support of Mr. Lionel Li, Founder of Li Foundation and an alumnus of Renmin University. The institution has been instrumental in fostering innovation in the philanthropic sector. Lionel, now serving as Vice Board Chairman of CIPSI, continues to play a vital role in shaping its strategic vision and initiatives.

This visit represents a significant step in bridging Chinese expertise with global philanthropic networks. By facilitating this exchange, Li Foundation reaffirms its commitment to foster impactful partnerships that advance family philanthropy and social innovation, empowering changemakers and strengthening communities.
