Technology Makes a Better Society — Code For All and Engineering Good

A group of outstanding teenagers who wants to encourage young children to dive into the world of coding and a group of engineers who wants to help vulnerable communities through technology solutions; What kind of inspiration will arise between them?

As a strategic partner of Code For All, Li Foundation held an exchange meeting with Code For All (CFA) and Engineering Good (EG) to explore possible future collaborations. Leo, Vice-President and Treasurer of CFA, shared with us the coding club was set up by a group of enthusiastic and talented student officers at the Singapore American School (SAS), which aims to empower inspired children of Singapore with computer science and coding skills.

Engineering Good (EG), is a Singapore-based registered Charity, a non-profit organization that empowers inclusivity for disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, such as persons with disabilities and low-income families, through sustainable engineering and technology solutions.

The founder of EG, Johann, and EG’ s COO, Patrick showed us some devices they have designed for people with disabilities, such as controllers and light switches. By replacing traditional buttons with more sensitive ones that can be easily used to turn on/off, EG helped people with disabilities perform daily tasks independently.

EG also collects, refurbishes, and then distributes used laptops to families and individuals who do not have access to such devices to stay digitally connected. EG has distributed more than 5,000 laptops as of October 2021 and they are still working on to fulfill requests at an average of 150-200 laptops in a month.

As part of their program, CFA provides laptops to their community partners to carry out coding lessons at the centers. By integrating EG into their ecosystem,  both parties can now work together to bring technology to more people. The SAS student officers are also planning to volunteer at EG to learn and help with the refurbishment. Their enthusiasm has touched Li Foundation deeply. As the new generation of charities, each has its unique vision and contributes to the society in novel and innovative ways.
